The Rolex caliber 3131 is a movement that is entirely developed and manufactured in-house by Rolex. It is a mechanical automatic movement with analog time and a bidirectional rotor. It is what Rolex calls a ”Perpetual movement” since being automatic, it can technically work perpetually. The Rolex Bubbleback 3131 is truly a vintage watch, as it is one of the brand’s very first fully-functional automatic timepieces produced in the 1930s and one of the earliest models from the iconic Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection.
Inside the Rolex Milgauss is the in-house Rolex 3131 movement, that while hidden from view, is superbly accurate and sparsely decorated. I’ve spent weeks wearing it noticing only about +/- 1 or 2 seconds difference from my iPhone reference time which I used to set the Rolex Milgauss using the 3131 movement hacking feature. The ref. 116900 is equipped with the Rolex Caliber 3131 – the exact same automatic movement used in the Rolex Milgauss. Just like the Milgauss (and pilot watches of a bygone era), the Air-King now has an internal shield to significantly increase the watch’s resistance to magnetic fields.
Rolex’s Caliber 3131 has a balance bridge, free-sprung fine regulator, blue Parachrom hairspring, and escape wheel and pallet fork made of antimagnetic material. The rate results for the new Rolex Milgauss were good, though they were not as precise as other Rolex watches that have undergone the same tests. The Rolex Bubbleback 3131 watch was one of the first automatic watches produced in the 1930’s, as well as one of the earliest Rolex models manufactured. While Rolex was not the first to create an automatic movement, the company patented its first successful self-winding wristwatch in 1932 and introduced the Bubbleback one year later.

Aside from the Parachrom hairspring (which is anti-magnetic), the watch is also fitted with an additional magnetic shield to protect the movement.
